Are you planning a trip to the land of fjords? If you’re familiar with mythology, you may also know know it as the land of the trolls and giants! Deeply engrained in the country, you’ll see huge troll statues everywhere you go. Places will even go so far as to claim their normal ice cream is troll ice cream! On the other hand, if you’re stopping by Jotunheimen national park, a fun fact is that Jotunheimen actually means the home of the giants.
During my trip to Norway, as I was driving around the country, I was listening to Neil Gaiman’s audio book Norsk Mythology, which tells the tales of the mischievousness of the Norse gods including Odin, Thor, and Loki. You’ll hear many mentions of Jotunheimen in this book as the gods visit the giants on many of their adventures / excursions.
Highlights of the country
- Polar bear safaris in Longyearbyen (Svalbard)
- Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) from September to March in Northern Norway (i.e. Bodø, Harstad/Narvik, Tromsø, Longyearbyen, Alta and Kirkenes)
- Exploring the cities of Oslo (East) and Bergen (West)
- Tour of the fjords (many places, but Geiranger is a popular one)
Oslo is the largest city in Norway and a must-visit on your trip around the country. Appreciate the works of Edward Munch and other Norwegian artists, run around the rooftop of the beautiful opera house, learn more about the vikings and various other polar expeditions (and see the actual ships!), walk thru Gustav Vigeland’s sculpture park, and just wander around the city observing daily life and sampling the Norwegian cuisine.
If you are driving around the area, I strongly recommend adding this beautiful, picturesque city to your itinerary. More details to follow.
Happy Exploring! ♥
